52 # What’s going on with the series’ distribution?

The next distributors (from the USA and Europe) wanted exclusive rights for the entire world and at the same time did not want to pay the minimum guarantee, which is what the company did on May 10, 2017 – Proven Entertainment. Pavel actually refused such cooperation.

But there is also some positive news from the series’ sales. In the spring of 2017, distributor Renderyard reported on the screenings of films released even on the largest platform, Amazon.

Film distribution through the aggregator Kinonation (FilmHub) has also started off well. This method at least inspires hope, some stability, and a promising future for film distribution and, of course, for the series Another Reality.

51 # Career Growth in a Whole New Field

March 2017 – Pavel began to build a career in a slightly different field (he went into marketing and the metal industry), and the creative separation did not last long.

Thanks to Sergey Bubnov’s recommendation, Pavel met several businessmen, and they offered Pavel a serious partnership in creating websites for purchasing radio components, and then to buy radio components themselves.

Pavel was able to handle any creative endeavor, even if he had to create websites during breaks between filming and editing the series.

Pavel met with his niece Alexandra Afanasyeva in April 2017. They decided to reminisce and watch the supposedly final edit of the first season. After watching the series, Alexandra announced that she wanted to return to the series…

And this is probably the best news in the last 5 years!

50 # Breakthrough rental begins in the West

The news spread quickly that two films had grossed over $5,000 at the international box office.

The KARBUSH Film Company’s phones are ringing off the hook, emails are abuzz, and social media is overflowing with messages. All the media outlets seem to have gone crazy (sarcasm), asking for interviews with Pavel Latushkin, and even radio stations have called, and articles have reached the national level.

At that time, digital sales of the film in Russia were also doing well.

But all of this ended in an instant, after Pavel and Sergey couldn’t come up with any news to continue to fuel interest and attract viewers.

Then the good news turned into the worst.

Distribution companies began to deceive and not pay the remuneration that was collected throughout the country from America and Canada for 1 year (namely 2016-2017).

Pavel hasn’t figured out yet and doesn’t understand how to protect his copyrights abroad, but the future belongs to the American audience (since there were sales and screenings of the series before, the project made money, and people liked the series)

This is where the screening of the two films ended, and Pavel stopped doing anything in that direction.

Pavel also held several test screenings, where viewers reported that after watching the films, it felt like it wasn’t the end, but as if they were watching not a film, but a separate episode of a series. These films are very similar to the series, or like excerpts from a series about specific characters.

After this, Pavel realized that it was necessary to add these two films to the first season, and these episodes would be a horizontal plot, a separate plot in two episodes.

So Pavel returned to editing in February 2017, began making a decent pilot episode, and then went about his personal business, as the series hadn’t had a truly genuine and decent pilot episode until now.

49 # What will happen to the Cult?

Pavel promised Yana Chapaeva and all the other participants that Cult would be released just like Cursed 2016, but this event never happened…

Something wasn’t working out with the film Cult… there was no musical accompaniment, no zest, and the abrupt and unclear ending forced director Pavel to pause for a moment and think about what to do next… since the distribution of the film Cursed took all his time and energy (it was necessary to prepare the film for further distribution and sale abroad).

By the way, the release of the film “Cursed” (2016) has been suspended. Pavel decided not to show the film in other cities. This didn’t affect the West, where online streaming services are easier, while working with movie theaters is more difficult.

For example, every movie theater has its own available slots, different dates, different months, so Pavel looked at the rentals in a small regional center and realized that it was simply not profitable…

48 # The spin-off series premieres in theaters.

The moment of truth began precisely when, just before the New Year, on December 26, 2016, the film “Cursed” was released at the Slava Cinema in Omsk. The film ran for two weeks.

By the way, here’s a photo from the film presentation.

Pavel continues to distribute the film in other cities and prepare new prints for cinemas and new contracts.

And in America, the series was released on little-known and private streaming services (for this, Pavel signed new contracts with several leading distributors, such as Renderyard and The B Company).

It’s safe to say that the “mess” that took place at the Omsk Forum in February 2011 ended precisely when some viewers came to the Slava cinema and finally saw Pavel Latushkin’s “masterpiece.”

Pavel expected negative comments, and that’s what he got (mostly they wrote that the plot was just the actor swaying back and forth, with no action or action. They also wrote that the musical score was completely unsuitable for the film (it’s like the TV series Magnificent Century—lots of drama, endless dialogue, intrigue—and the music is like Blockbuster). Similarly, the 2016 film Cursed turned out to be a Macumentary—just an unfinished one.

Overall, Pavel was completely satisfied with the result and the reviews—because he’d spent so many years preparing to at least earn audience attention, showcase his creations, and receive meaningful reviews. Pavel got what he wanted, and he’s happy!

47 # Let’s remember the past and try to implement plans in the present…

Pavel made connections in British Columbia to have his own translator for the series from Russian to English (and the partners were native speakers of both Russian and English).

In August 2016, when Pavel was already editing the final episode of the first season, he remembered that a long time ago, he filmed the beginning of the story of Another Reality in one of the abandoned houses, as well as in the catacombs…

As a reminder, the film was called “Another Reality” in 1010, and starred Elena Lagoda and Alexander Korzukhin. The plot revolved around a young couple planning to move into an abandoned house, clean it up, and renovate it, but they stumble upon occult objects in one of the rooms, which was always locked… By the end of the story, Lena finds herself in the catacombs…

And then Pavel remembered the movie Cursed (2011), about the events that happened to the girl Sasha, she comes to the village to visit her classmate, and on the way she came across those very anomalous catacombs and the plot began to unfold…

These were films, and although they have a connection to the series, it is indirect.

Pavel makes a controversial decision to remake these stories with new actors and release the films in theaters.

The first project Pavel took on was Cursed 2016.

Pavel is tired of actors coming and going, like in a game of chess. It’s better to make a film, have a coherent plot, release it in theaters, make money, and then decide how to release the series widely.

Pavel and Sergey purchased an action camera to make their shooting style even more amateur, mainstream, and unique.

The first film is called Cult (in which Yana Chapaeva starred with Vitaly Marks and Sergei Bubnov), and the second film is Cursed 2016 (a remake of 2011), starring Maria Pyzhikova, Alexander Gudkov, Sofia Mogil, Vitaly Orover, and Sergei Bubnov.

KARBUSH Film Company LLC also acquired American composer Kevin MacLeod (under a CC license) and distributors for English-speaking audiences.

The films were shot quickly!
The actors participated from start to finish.

The film Cult required re-dubbing.

The 2016 film “Cursed” turned out light and musical; the editing flowed like a light song. But with “Cult,” things weren’t going so well; they couldn’t find the right music… And the dubbing process dragged on. Pavel and Sergey even had to record all the sounds, footsteps, creaks, and so on…

As a result, the film Cursed (2016) was ready for release in theaters earlier than Cult.

46 # Everything’s fine, we’ll keep filming the series, otherwise no one will know what the ending of the first season is…

This cast lasted until the end of January 2016, but Daria Ermakova eventually left the project due to disagreements with the director.

But the team managed to film the juiciest moments for the first season of Another Reality.

And the shock doesn’t end there…

International_Flix closed. It was a shame, but Pavel was delighted with the service, because it had viewers, views, a small income, and timely payments.

The video service will long remain in Pavel’s memory as the most positive partner of the KARBUSH Film Company.

But there’s no time to relax; we need to edit what we filmed earlier, more or less put it together, and release the series on Kinonation (FilmHub).

And now summer has arrived, it is necessary to finish the first season with the cast that the KARBUSH Film Company has.

Pavel more or less got the plot under control, and then realized that the first season of the series consisted of a collection of chaotic plots that had main characters in each episode, but no longer had a unified storyline, because the actors, like chess pieces, did not match the ending, and the plot broke off from episode to episode.

The series has its old title back – Another Reality.

From July to August 2016, filming continued with the regular cast – Maria Pyzhikova, Alexander Gudkov, Sergey Bubnov, Vitaly Orover, and the series also saw the return of veterans – Yana Chapaeva, Sofia Mogil, and a new actor joined them – Radion Eldrakhanov!

The main feature of the series and the director is that Pavel was always looking for an actor who would become the face of the series. After all, there should be at least one or two regular characters, and there should be hope that these actors would continue to star in new seasons, despite the fact that it is difficult at the creation stage, especially without royalties to work…

Therefore, if someone leaves the project, Pavel Latushkin immediately feels the urge to close the project and stop suffering.

45 # We need more video services like this where we can show the series…

Pavel wanted more video services to agree to show the series right now, but other companies have their own agendas, and the series wasn’t part of those.

We only managed to reach an agreement with the aggregator Kinonation (FilmHub) – a platform where directors post their projects for easy and successful distribution. This platform serves to unite directors and video services from around the world.

But what was stressful was that it was necessary to post the entire series at once, with all the seasons and episodes, and then wait 3 months for the sites to be accepted, and then another 3-6 months until the first report on views.

January 2016 arrived, and the film crew was forced to gather for the last time for filming. Pavel hid from everyone the fact that his relationship with Daria Ermakova was already going badly.

Pavel explained this by saying that he doesn’t like it when actors interfere in things that aren’t theirs; there’s no need for a director to impose his point of view on distribution.

Daria Ermakova especially emphasized that Pavel first needs to go on TV and introduce himself, for example, he needs to come to the same TV3 channel…

But Pavel already knew how it would end…

He had previously approached Moscow, and he received an offer to bring a director to Omsk, to the editing room, at the film company’s expense, and for 100 thousand a month, this director was ready to glue together the first season from all the material (that Pavel had filmed), and then this director would come to TV 3 and sell the entire series for 1 million rubles.

The result is the following: the losses immediately after such a transaction will amount to 5 million rubles!

44 # New Stage!

In early September 2015, Pavel was invited to work in the Sverdlovsk region in political and social activities. His task was to write projects to receive Presidential grants for public needs.

This activity did not last very long, because in his free time, all of Pavel’s thoughts were immersed in the series.

It even got to the point that at the end of October, Pavel, while working on another political project, was on the social network VKontakte looking for actors for a new shoot, thus expanding the cast.

At the end of 2015 – and at the beginning of 2016, Pavel had a new team – Daria Ermakova, Yulia Star, Artyom Krivonosov, Sergey Bubnov, Maria Pyzhikova

A decision was made to change the name of the series again, and now, as of December 2015, the series is called The Risen.

While filming had already begun, Pavel immediately began editing and releasing the first episodes of the series “The Rebels” on the video-on-demand service International_Flix.

International_Flix had the following rules: each episode had a price, and the entire season wasn’t sold. Each episode cost $3.50, which is certainly expensive.

International_Flix has a small audience, but Pavel has released a couple of episodes, and the rest are in editing.

The result was the following: a small reward and feedback from viewers in the style of – give us new episodes – and give us a continuation of the series, it’s very interesting!

This is a great incentive to continue filming, to steer the plot, and finally the audience will see a full-fledged series, albeit with the nondescript title “The Rebellion,” and Pavel secretly didn’t particularly like this title.

43 # Filming is what a director loves most…

In April 2015, FLIPPS MEDIA, INC., a company, committed piracy. A contract had been signed. Pavel gave them an old version of the series to be on the safe side and test their intentions for the partnership. However, the company pirated content left and right. Throughout 2015, Pavel requested monthly reports numerous times, but they were late. When Pavel learned the series was making money from viewers, he demanded payment, to which the company stopped communicating and didn’t respond to his emails.

On May 27, 2015, a contract was signed with International_Flix. The video-on-demand service was excellent, but there was no finished material at the time – let alone a full first season… Therefore, the contract was signed, but Pavel decided not to release any content; he took a short break.

In the summer of 2015, Pavel temporarily stopped working in filmmaking altogether, focusing more on community work and meeting people in the political sphere in order to understand and figure out whether it might be time to continue working in filmmaking and whether it might be better to devote himself to another field, such as public policy and organizing a public internet television station, Karbush TV, in the Omsk region.

Pavel was even invited to run for local Deputies in the village of Verkhnee Karbush, where, as a candidate, he met a wonderful person – Sergei Bubnov, who was also running for Local Rural Deputies at the time.

Pavel told Sergey what he does in life, what his dream and goal are.

Sergey Bubnov was very interested in the topic of cinematography.

And after a small jolt, there was still a jolt…

Despite the fact that Yana Chapaeva has left the project, it’s necessary to film a worthy finale, but with different characters. And if new faces are added, then it’s necessary to film the prequel and then the season finale.

Because the point of a series finale is if the main characters no longer appear in future sequels.

Later, Pavel met Maria Pyzhikova, established a relationship with Sofia Mogil, and they got together for the shoot, filming everything they needed in just a few days. It’s even safe to say, judging by Maria’s performance, that this character is Madina’s main rival and could completely replace her in the plot.

Sergey Bubnov and Alexander Gudkov also joined the filming.

By the way, at this point, Sergei Bubnov also became a co-producer and helped organize the filming, and also served as a handy specialist (for example, he was also a driver to bring and take the actors to and from the filming)

In general, the scenes for the series were filmed about Deputy Pavel not getting through… and then leaving for the Sverdlovsk region on a business trip.
